Solution:

Reaction of $III$ with $C _{6} H _{5} CH _{2} OCH _{3}$ follow $SE ^{1}$ mechanism which lead to the formation of carbonium ion. Benzyl cation is more stable than methyl cation, so it is formed as the intermediate which leads to the formations of $C _{6} H _{5} CH _{2} I$ and $CH _{3} OH$.
