Q. Assertion The electromagnetic wave is transverse in nature.
Reason The wave propagates in straight line.

Electromagnetic Waves

Solution:

The electromagnetic wave contains sinusoidally time varying electric and magnetic fields which act perpendicularly to each other as well as at right angle $\left(90^{\circ}\right)$ to the direction of propagation of waves, so it is quite clear that electromagnetic waves are transverse in nature. The two components of field may be represented as
$E=E_{0} \sin \omega\left(t-\frac{x}{v}\right)$
$B=B_{0} \sin \omega\left(t-\frac{x}{v}\right)$
