Q. Assertion: Photorespiration is a wasteful process.
Reason :In photorespiratory pathway, there is no synthesis of sugars or ATP.

Photosynthesis in Higher Plants

Solution:

Photorespiration is the light dependent process of oxygenation of ribulose biphosphate $(RuBP)$ and release of carbon dioxide by the photosynthetic organs of a plant. In the photorespiratory pathway, there is neither synthesis of sugars nor of $ATP$. Rather, it results in the release of $CO_{2}$ with the utilisation of $ATP$. Therefore, photorespiration is a wasteful process.
