Q. Assertion : Osmotic pressure is numerically equivalent to the osmotic potential.
Reason : Osmotic pressure is the negative pressure applied, while osmotic potential is positive.

Transport in Plants

Solution:

Osmotic pressure is defined as the pressure required to completely stop the entry of water into an osmotically active solution across a semipermeable membrane. Thus water will move from a region of low osmotic pressure to a region of high osmotic pressure. It is measured in atmospheres, bars or pascals. Osmotic pressure is numerically equal to osmotic potential ($=$ solute potential, $\Psi_{s}$) but osmotic potential has a negative value, while osmotic pressure ($\pi$, pi) has a positive value, $\left(\Psi_{s}=-\pi\right)$.
