Q. Assertion: On heating, a solid usually changes to a liquid and the liquid on further heating changes to the gaseous state
Reason: Arrangement of constituent particles is different in solid, liquid and gaseous state

Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry

Solution:

On heating, the interparticle distance and freedom of movement of particles increase and interparticle forces decrease. Hence, on heating solids changes to liquids, where the particles are comparatively less close to each other and hence can move around. Liquids on further heating changes to gaseous state, in which the particles are far apart as compared to solids or liquids and their movement is easy and fast
