Q. Assertion : Ionic bonds are directional in nature whereas covalent bonds are non-directional.
Reason : According to orbital overlap concept, the formation of a covalent bond between two atoms results by pairing of electrons present in the valence shell having same spins.

Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure

Solution:

Covalent bond between two atoms is formed by pairing of electrons present in the valence shell having opposite spins (orbital overlap concept). Covalent bonds are directional in nature as hybrid orbitals are involved in bond formation which are directed in space in some preferred directions, (valence bond theory).
