Q. Assertion: Among the primates, chimpanzee is the closest relative of the present day humans.
Reason : The banding pattern in the autosome numbers $3$ and $6$ of man and chimpanzee is remarkably similar.

Haryana PMTHaryana PMT 2004

Solution:

Humanity did not evolve from the chimpanzee, which has spent time evolving on its own path for millions of years from our last common ancestor. Still, chimps are the closest living relatives of humans sharing 98.8 percent of their DNA — and new research is continuing to shed light on just how similar humans remain, promising to yield insights into the roots of both humans and chimpanzees. A comparative study of the banded chromosomes of man and the great apes has also been done. It has been shown that the total amount of DNA in human diploid cells and that of the apes is more or less similar. It has also been observed that the banding pattern of individual human chromosomes is very similar to the banding pattern of corresponding chromosomes in apes. The banding pattern of human chromosome numbers 3 and 6 are compared shows a common origin for man and chimpanzee.
