Q. Assertion: Alkanes having more than three carbon atoms exhibit chain isomerism.
Reason: All carbon atoms in alkanes are sp‐hybridized.

AIIMSAIIMS 1994

Solution:

Chain isomerism occurs due to difference in the arrangement of $C$ -atoms in the chain. Simplest compound exhibiting chain Isomerism is butane. e.g.

$\underset{\text{n- butane}}{CH _{3} CH _{2} CH _{2} CH _{3}}$

$\underset{\text{lso butane}}{CH_3 - \overset{\overset{CH_3}{|}}{C}H - CH_3}$

All carbon atoms in all alkanes are $s p^{3}$ hybridised.
