Q. Arrange the following acids in decreasing order of acidic strength

Delhi UMET/DPMTDelhi UMET/DPMT 2008

Solution:

Relative strength of organic acids A compound is acidic in nature, if its conjugate base can stabilize through resonance. Thus, phenol is more acidic while alcohol are neutral because the conjugate base of phenol $ ({{C}_{6}}{{H}_{5}}{{O}^{-}}) $ can be stabilised through resonance while that of alcohol cannot. Hydrogen atom attached to sp-hybridised carbon is more acidic than that of $ sp^{2}$ hybridised carbon and that of $sp^{3}$ hybridised carbon. Thus, alkynes are more acidic than alkene and alkanes. Thus, the decreasing order of acidic strength of following acids is
