Anhydrous aluminium chloride $\left( Al _2 Cl _6\right)$ is covalent compound and soluble in water giving $\left[ AlCl _2\left( H _2 O \right)_4\right]^{+}$and $\left[ AlCl _4\left( H _2 O \right)_2\right]^{-}$ions $AlCl _3 \cdot 6 H _2 O \stackrel{\text { dissociation }}{\rightarrow}\left[ AlCl _2\left( H _2 O \right)\right]^{+}+\left[ AlCl _4\left( H _2 O _2\right]^{-}\right.$$\left[ AlCl _2\left( H _2 O \right)_4\right]^{+}+\left[ AlCl _4\left( H _2 O \right)_2\right]^{-}$
