Q. An organic compound ' $X$ ' having molecular formula $C _{3} H _{7} N$ can decolourize bromine present in carbon tetrachloride. The compound ' $X$ ' has all three carbon atoms in straight chain. When this compound is heated with alcoholic $KOH$ and chloroform, it gives an organic compound having molecular formula $C _{ x } H _{ y } N$. The value of ' $y$ ' is______.

Amines

Solution:

Compound ' $X$ ' can decolourize bromine in $CCl _{4}$ due to the presence of double bond. Several isomeric amine structures can be drawn for the formula $C _{3} H _{7} N$. Out of which we need a structure that contains $1^{\circ}$ amine group $- NH _{2}$. One possible structure is:

In the reaction, $- NH _{2}$ group is replaced by $- NC$ group.
Other isomeric $1^{\circ}$ amine structures also give corresponding isocyanide having same molecular formula $\left( C _{4} H _{5} N \right)$.
Thus, final product will have a molecular formula $C _{4} H _{5} N$.
$\therefore y=5$
