Q. An organic compound with the formula $ {{C}_{6}}{{H}_{12}}{{O}_{6}} $ forms a yellow crystalline solid with phenylhydrazine and gives a mixture of sorbitol and mannitol when reduced with sodium. Which among the following could be the compound?

BHUBHU 2010

Solution:

Since, $C _{6} H _{12} O _{6}$ forms a crystalline osazone with phenylhydrazine, it must be an aldohexose or ketohexose. Moreover, on reduction with Na, it gives sorbitol and mannitol, it must be fructose.
