Q. An organic compound contains $20.0 \% C$, $6.66 \% H$, $47.33 \% N$ and the rest was oxygen. Its molar mass is $60\, g\, mol ^{-1} .$ The molecular formula of the compound is $CH _{4}$ $N _{x} O ,$ the value of $x$ is ______

Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry

Solution:

Ratio of atoms

$C : H : N : O :: \frac{20.0}{12}: \frac{6.66}{1}: \frac{47.33}{14}: \frac{26.01}{16}$

$=1.67: 6.66: 3.38: 1.63$

$=1: 4: 2: 1$

Empirical formula $= CH _{4} N _{2} O$

Molar empirical formula mass $=60 \,g$

Molecular formula $= CH _{4} N _{2} O$

Thus $x=2$
