Q. An organic compound $A$ containing $C$, $H$ and $O$ has a pleasant odour with boiling point of $78^°C$. On boiling $A$ with concentrated $H_2SO_4$, a colourless gas is produced which decolourises bromine water and alkaline $KMnO_4$. The organic liquid $A$ is

KCETKCET 2005Alcohols Phenols and Ethers

Solution:

The organic liquid $A$ is $C_2H_5OH$

(i) Ethyl alcohol is a colourless liquid with a characteristic pleasant smell, having boiling point $78.1^{\circ}\,C$

(ii) $C_2H_5OH \, \stackrel{\operatorname{conc} \cdot H _{2} SO _{4}}{\longrightarrow } CH _{2}= CH _{2}$

(which decolourises $Br _{2}$ water and alk. $KMnO _{4}$ )
