Work done by the gas is equal to area of rectangle $ABCDA$, (figure).
$=A B \times B C=\left(2 V_{0}\right) P_{0}=2 P_{0} V_{0}$
As the trace is anticlockwise, this work is done on the gas.
$\therefore $ Work done by the gas $=-2 P_{0} V_{0}$
