Q. An exothermic reaction with $ \Delta S=-ve,\, $ is:

JIPMERJIPMER 1997

Solution:

An exothermic reaction with $ \Delta S=-ve, $ is spontaneous, when: $ \Delta H>T.\,\Delta S $ i.e., at low temperatures. Since from, Gibbs-Helmholtz equation. $ \Delta G=\Delta H-T.\Delta G $ $ \Delta G $ to be negative, $ \Delta H>T.\,\Delta S $ (if $ \Delta H=-\,ve, $ $ \Delta S=-\,ve $ ) Hence, reaction will be non-spontaneous at high temperatures.
