Methyl salicylate is used as medicine for care of sciatica, rheumatism, lumbago, and arthiritis. It is a constituent of oil of wintergreen. It is prepared by refluxing salicylic acid with methyl alcohol.
When salicylic acid is heated with phenol in the presence of phosphoryl chloride, salol is formed.
