Q. An energy of $24.6\, eV$ is required to remove one of the electrons from a helium atom. The energy required to remove both electrons from helium atoms is

NTA AbhyasNTA Abhyas 2022

Solution:

Required energy $=I . E_1+I . E_2$ $=24.6\, eV$
after removal of $1^{\text {st }} e ^{-} He ^{+}$form ( $H$-like), hence Bohr's model applicable.
$I.E_2=I . E_H \times Z^2 $
$=13.6 \times 4=54.4 \, eV$
So total energy required $=24.6+54.4=79 \, eV$
