Q. An element having atomic number $56$ belongs to :

AFMCAFMC 2002

Solution:

Electronic configuration (atomic number $56$)
$1 s^{2}, 2 s^{2}, 2 p^{6}, 3 s^{2} 3 p^{6} 3 d^{10}, 4 s^{2} 4 p^{6} 4 d^{10}5 s^{2} 5 p^{6}, 6 s^{2}$
The last $2$ electrons are filled in $s$ orbital so the element belong to II group (alkaline earth). As the element contain six shells hence, it belong to sixth period.
