Q. An electric dipole is placed making at an angle $60^{\circ}$ with an electric field of strength $4 \times 10^{5} N / C$. It experiences a torque equal to $8 \sqrt{3} N - m$. Calculate the charge on the dipole, if it is of length $4\, cm$.

Solution:

$\tau= PE \sin \theta= q ( d ) E \sin \theta$
$q =\frac{\tau}{ dE \sin \theta}=\frac{8 \times \sqrt{3}}{4 \times 10^{-2} \times 4 \times 10^{5} \sin 60}$
$=10^{-3} C$
