Q. An aldehyde can be obtained from an acid chloride by:

JIPMERJIPMER 1998

Solution:

An acid chloride, on reduction with $ Pd\text{/}BaS{{O}_{4}} $ in boiling xylene, gives aldehyde. $ \underset{Acid\,chloride}{\mathop{R--\overset{O}{\mathop{\overset{||}{\mathop{C}}\,}}\,--Cl}}\,\,\,+{{H}_{2}}\xrightarrow[Xylene]{Pd/BaS{{O}_{4}}}\underset{Aldehyde}{\mathop{R--\overset{O}{\mathop{\overset{||}{\mathop{C}}\,}}\,--H}}\,\,+HCl $ This reaction is known as Rosenmunds reduction.
