Q. An aeroplane flying horizontally with a velocity of $216\, km\, h ^{-1}$ drops a food packet while flying at a height of $490 \,m$. The total horizontal distance travelled by the packet is

Motion in a Plane

Solution:

Time of fall, $t=\sqrt{\frac{2 h}{g}}=\sqrt{\frac{2 \times 490}{9.8}}=10\, s$
Horizontal speed $=216 \times \frac{5}{18}=12 \times 5 \,ms ^{-1}=60 \,ms ^{-1}$
Horizontal distance $=60 \,ms ^{-1} \times 10\, s =600\, m$
