Coordination Compounds
A
$[Mn(H_2 O)_6]^{3+}$
12%
B
$[Fe(H_2O)_6]^{3+}$
56%
C
$[Co (H_2O)_6]^{2+}$
19%
D
$Co (H_2O)_6]^{3+}$
12%
Solution:
The CFSE for octahedral complex is given by
CFSE $=\left[-0.4 t_{2 g} e^{-}+0.6 e_{g} e^{-}\right]$
For $M n^{3+},\left[3 d^{4}\right] \rightarrow t_{2 g}^{3} e_{g}^{1}$
$\therefore C F S E=[(-0.4 \times 3)+(0.6 \times 1)]=-0.6$
For $Fe e^{3+},\left[3 d^{5}\right] \rightarrow t_{2 g}^{3} e_{g}^{2}$
CFSE $=[-(0.4 \times 3)+(0.6 \times 2)]=0$
For $C^{2+},\left[3 d^{7}\right] \rightarrow t_{2 g}^{5} e_{g}^{2}$
CFSE $=[(-0.4 \times 5)+(2 \times 0.6)]=0$
$=-0.8$
For $C o^{3+},\left[3 d^{6}\right] \rightarrow t_{2 g}^{4} e_{g}^{2}$
CFSE $=[(-0.4 \times 4)+(2 \times 0.6)]$
$=-0.4$
