Q. Among $CH_4, CO_2, H_2O$ and $SO_2$ the bond angle is the highest in

KVPYKVPY 2009Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure

Solution:

As the number of lone pairs of electrons increases, bond angle decreases.
The number of lone pair in $CH_4, CO_2, H_2O$ and $SO_2$ respectively are $0, 0, 2$ and $1. So, CH_4$ and $CO_2$ will have the maximum bond angle.
Also, multiple bond orbitals repel other orbitals more strongly than single bond orbital.
Thus, the bond angle will increase.
As $CH_4$ has single bonds whereas $CO_2$ has double bonds.
Therefore, $CO_2$ has the highest bond angle.
