Only pure 1o amines can be prepared by Gabriel synthesis. Aniline cannot be prepared by this method as aryl halides ( $C_{6}H_{5}Cl$ or $C_{6}H_{5}Br$ ) cannot undergo nucleophilic substitution as cleavage of C - X bond in haloarene is quite difficult with potassium phthalimide under ordinary conditions to give N-phenyl phthalimide.
