Nitrogen fixation in cyanobacteria mainly occurs in specialized cells called heterocysts. Heterocysts are large-sized, pale-colored, non-motile, mucilage free thick-walled cells that are impermeable to oxygen. Euglena is the connecting link between plants and animals.
