Q.
Aldehydes and ketones can be reduced to hydrocarbon by using
AMUAMU 2019
Solution:
By $NH_{2} — NH_{2}/C_{2}H_{5}ONa$,
aldehyde and ketones are reduced with hydrazine $nH_{2} — NH_{2}$ and $C_{2}H_{5}ONa$ to give hydrocarbon (paraffins)
This reaction is called Wolf-Kishner reaction
$\underset{\text{Aldehyde}}{{—CHO}} \xrightarrow[C_{2}H_{5}ONa]{NH_{2}—NH_{2}} \underset{\text{Paraffin}}{{—CH_{3}}}$
$—CO \xrightarrow[C_{2}H_{5}ONa]{NH_{2}—NH_{2}} - CH_2 - $
Ketone paraffin
