In presence of acids, alcohols act as Lewis base but in presence of base, they act as Bronsted acid, ie,
$ROH + H ^{+} \longrightarrow R - OH _2^{+}$
$ROH + Na \longrightarrow RO ^{-} Na ^{+}+\frac{1}{2} H _2$
