Q. Acetophenone $\left( C _{6} H _{5} COCH _{3}\right)$ is prepared from reaction of benzene $\left( C _{6} H _{6}\right)$ with $A$ in the presence of anhyd. $AlCl _{3}$. Here, $A$ refers to

Hydrocarbons

Solution:

The reaction of benzene with an acyl halide or acid anhydride in the presence of Lewis acid $\left( AlCl _{3}\right)$ yields acyl benzene.
This reaction is called Friedel-Craft's acylation reaction as shown below :
$C_6H_6 + CH_3COCl \xrightarrow{\text{Anhyd. } AlCl_3} \underset{\text{Acetophenone}}{C_6H_5COCH_3 } + HCl$
