Solution:

According to transpiration pull theory proposed by Dixon and Jolly cohesive and adhesive forces of water and transpiration pull generated in leaves causes ascent of sap. Continuous vertical water column is maintained in xylem vessels and xylem tracheids through which upward movement of water occurs.
