Q. A tuning fork of 512 Hz is used to produce resonance in a resonance tube experiment. The level of water at first resonance is 30.7 cm and at second resonance is 63.2 cm. The error in calculating velocity of sound is

IIT JEEIIT JEE 2005Waves

Solution:

The question is incomplete, as speed of sound is not given.
Let us assume speed of sound as 330 m/s. Then, method will be as under
$\, \, \, \, \, \frac {\lambda}{2}=(63.2-30.7)cm \, or \, \lambda=0.65 m $
$\therefore $ Speed of sound observed,
$\, \, \, \, v_0=f \lambda =512 \times0.65=332.8 m/s $
$\therefore $ Error in calculating velocity of sound = 2.8 m/s
=280cm/s
