Q. A tank is filled with benzene to a height of $ 120\,\,mm $ . The apparent depth of a needle lying at a bottom of the tank is measured by a microscope to be $ 80\,\,mm $ . Then the refractive index of benzene will be

Solution:

Real depth $ {{d}_{1}}=120\,\,mm $ Apparent depth $ {{d}_{a}}=80\,\,mm $ Refractive index of benzene is given by $ \mu =\frac{real\,\,depth}{apparent\,\,depth}=\frac{{{d}_{1}}}{{{d}_{a}}}=\frac{120}{80}=1.5 $
