Q. A steady current flows in a metallic conductor of non-uniform cross-section. Which of the following quantities is constant along the conductor?

ManipalManipal 2015

Solution:

When a steady current flows through a metallic conductor of non-uniform cross-section, then drift velocity
$V _{ d }=\frac{ I }{\text { enA }}$ or $V _{ d } \propto \frac{1}{ A }$
$E=\frac{I}{\sigma A}$ or $E \propto \frac{1}{A}$
Both $V_{d}$ and $E$ change with $A$, only current $I$ remains constant.
