Q. A species whose distribution is restricted to small geographical area due to the presence of a comparatively superior species expands its distribution when the competing species is experimentally removed. What is this phenomenon called?

Solution:

The rivalry between two or more organisms for acquiring the same resource is called competition. It is a (-,-) type of population interaction. Competition occurs when resources, such as space, light and nutrients, are in short supply. Competitive release results in a dramatic increase in the population of a less–distributed species in a geographical area, when its superior competitor is removed experimentally from that area.
