Q. A source of frequency $f$ is emitting sound waves. If temperature of the medium increases, then

KVPYKVPY 2009Wave Optics

Solution:

Velocity of sound in an isentropic gaseous medium is given by
$\upsilon=\sqrt{\frac{\gamma RT}{m}}$
$\Rightarrow \upsilon \propto \sqrt{T}$
Also, $\upsilon=f\lambda$
$ \Rightarrow \lambda \propto\sqrt{T}$
Because frequency is a characteristics of source and it remains constant with change in temperature of medium.
