Q.
A solution of sodium metal in liquid ammonia is a strong reducing agent due to the presence of
Chhattisgarh PMTChhattisgarh PMT 2007
Solution:
All alkali metals are soluble in liquid ammonia.
$N a+(x+y) N H_{3} \rightarrow \underset{\text{ammoniated cation}}{N a^{+}\left(N H_{3}\right)_{x}}+ \underset{\text{ammoniated electron}}{e^{-}\left(N H_{3}\right)_{y}}$
Due to presence of ammoniated electrons, sodium metal in liquid ammonia is a strong reducing agent.
