Q. A small power station supplies electricity to $ 5000 $ lamps connected in parallel. Each lamp has a resistance of $ 220 \,\Omega$ and is operated at $ 220\, V $ . The total current supplied by the station is

UPSEEUPSEE 2009Current Electricity

Solution:

As resistances are in parallel
$\frac{1}{R_{ eq }}=\frac{1}{220}+\frac{1}{220}+\ldots 5000$ times
$\frac{1}{R_{ eq }}=\frac{5000}{220} $
$\Rightarrow R_{ eq }=\frac{220}{5000}$
Now, $V=220$ volt
$\therefore I=\frac{220}{\frac{220}{5000}}=5000\, A$
