Q. A small air bubble is situated in a cube of $24 \,cm$ edge when viewed from one face, it appear to be $10 \,cm$ from the surface and through the opposite face is 6 m from the surface. Then the refractive index of the material of the cube is

AMUAMU 2000

Solution:

Refractive index $(\mu)$ is defined as ratio of real depth upon apparent depth.

$\therefore $ Real depth $=24\, cm$,
apparent depth $=10+6=16 \,cm$
$\therefore \mu=\frac{24}{16}=1.5$
