Q. A sinusoidal wave $y_{i}=a \sin (\omega t-k x)$ is reflected from a rigid support and the reflected wave superposes with the incident wave, $y_{i}$. Assume the rigid support to be at $x=0$,

Waves

Solution:

As the support is rigid, the wave is reflected in opposite phase hence at the support destructive interference takes place and node will be obtained. Due to nodes and antinodes at different positions, intensity of wave varies periodically with distance.
