Solution:

KI is added to old stocks of ethers when I is oxidised to $ {{I}_{2}} $ by ether peroxide which itself is reduced to ether $ 2{{I}^{-}}\xrightarrow{{}}{{I}_{2}}+2{{e}^{-}} $ Ether peroxide $ +\,2{{e}^{-}}\xrightarrow{{}} $ ether $ +{{O}_{2}} $ In actual practice, the old stock of ether is repeatedly shaken with KI solution till it ceases to impart brown colour due to liberation of $ {{I}_{2}} $ .
