Q. A sample of diesel has the same knocking characteristics as a 60 mL mixture of cetane and a-methyl naphthalene mixed in 2 :1 ratio. The cetane number of the diesel sample is

CMC MedicalCMC Medical 2007

Solution:

Volume of cetane = 60 x (2/3) = 40 mL Volume of $ \alpha \text{-} $ methylnaphthalene $ =60\times \frac{1}{2}=20\text{ }mL $ $ \therefore $ cetane number of diesel sample $ =\frac{40}{60}\times 100=66.6 $
