Q. A sample of chloroform before being used as an anaesthetic agent is tested by

Haloalkanes and Haloarenes

Solution:

Chloroform is tested before use, for the presence of extremely poisonous gas phosgene, that may be formed on storage. If $CHCl _{3}$ sample contains phosgene $\left( COCl _{2}\right)$ then it will give a white ppt. when treated with $AgNO _{3}$ solution in the cold.
