Q.
A radioactive nucleus emits $3α$-particles and $5β$-particles. The ratio of number of neutrons to that of protons will be
Nuclei
Solution:
During the emission of $α$-particle, the mass number and atomic number decreases by four and two respectively. During the emission of $β$-particle the mass number remains the same while the atomic number increases by 1.
$\therefore \frac{\text{No. of neutrons}}{\text{No. of protons}} = \frac{A-12-\left(Z-1\right)}{Z-1}$
$= \frac{A-Z-11}{Z-1}$
