Q. A particle moves along the $x$-axis from $x=x_{1}$ to $x=x_{2}$ under the action of a force given by $F=2 x$. Then the work done in the process is

J & K CETJ & K CET 2003Work, Energy and Power

Solution:

Mechanical work $(W)$ is the force applied through a distance, defined mathematically as the line integral of a scalar product of force $(F)$ and displacement $(d x)$ vectors
$W=\int F d x$
Given $F=2 x$
hence $W=\int\limits_{x_{1}}^{x_{2}} 2 x d x$
$=2\left[\frac{x^{2}}{2}\right]_{x_{1}}^{x_{2}}$ $=x_{2}^{2}-x_{1}^{2}$
