Q. A molecule $XY_{2}$ contains two sigma bonds, two $\pi$-bonds and one lone pair of electrons in the valence shell of $X$. The arrangement of lone pair as well as bond pairs is:

Solution:

The valence shell of $X$ has two $\sigma$-bonds and one lone pair of electrons. Therefore, it has planar triangular geometry. It may be mentioned here that bond pairs involved in the formation of $ \pi - $ bonds are not considered while deciding the geometry of the molecule.
