Q. A mixture of NO2 and N2O4 has a vapour density of 38.3 at 300 K. What is the number of moles of NO2 in 100 g of the mixture ?

Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry

Solution:

Average mol. mass of mixture =2×V.D
=2×38.3=76.6
Let mixture contains a moles of NO2 and b moles of N2O4
a×46+b×92a+b=76.6
(Molar mass of NO2=46gmol1 molar mass of N2O4=92gmol1)
Let mass of NO2=x and mass of N2O4=100x
a=x46 and b=100x92
x+100xx46+100x92=76.6
x46+100x92=10076.6
x=100×15.476.6
No. of moles of NO2a=x46
=100×15.446×76.6=0.437
