Q. A linear harmonic oscillator of force constant $6 \times 10^{5} N / m$ and amplitude $4\, cm$, has a total energy $600\, J$. Select the correct statement.

Oscillations

Solution:

$k=6 \times 10^{5} N / m$
Amplitude $=4 \,cm =4 \times 10^{-2} m$
$=\frac{1}{2} k x^{2}=\frac{1}{2} \times 6 \times 10^{5} \times\left(4 \times 10^{-2}\right)^{2}$
or $E=480\, J$
Since energy of S.H.M. is $480\, J$ and there is $600\, J$ provided to the oscillation there must be $600-120=480 \,J$ stored as energy.
