Q. A gun fires a bullet of 50 g with a velocity of $30\,ms^{-1}$. The gun is then pushed back with a velocity of $1\,ms^{-1}$ . The mass of gun is

Laws of Motion

Solution:

Applying principle of conservation of momentum,
$m_1 \, \upsilon_1 + m_2 \, \upsilon_2 = 0$
$(50 \times 10^{-3}) (30) + m_2 (- 1) = 0$ i.e. $m_2 = 1.5 \, kg$
Mass of gun is 1.5 kg
