Pseudonomas putida are hydrocarbon degrading facultative anaerobes, that play an important role in the clean-up after an oil spill. They are popularly known as oil eating microbes. P. putida, a gram-negative bacterium found in water and rhizosphere, is called as "super bug".
Bioremediation is a strategy that uses naturally occurring organisms to break down pollutants, such as petroleum hydrocarbons into less toxic substances. Species in the bacterial genus Pseudomonas present a high potential for hydrocarbon degeneration. Pseudomonas has shown a robust response to oil spills in-situ.
