Q. A gaseous mixture contains 50% helium and 50% methane by volume. What is the percent by weight of methane in the mixture ?

Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry

Solution:

$\frac{\text{Vol. of He}}{\text{Vol. of } CH_{4}}=\frac{50}{50}=\frac{1}{1}$
$\frac{\text{No. of molecules of He}}{\text{No. of molecules of } CH_{4}}=\frac{1}{1}$
$\frac{\text{Mass of He}}{\text{Mass of } CH_{4}}=\frac{4}{16}=\frac{1}{4}$
$\therefore $ Percentage of $CH_{4}$ in mixture $ \frac{4}{5}\times100=80\%$
